I am continuing my work in wire preserving the notion of creating mass with a singular, linear element. The work is a body of matter that forms a whole but has no definable shape while conforming to the shape of the room. Hopefully, it will not refer to any previous experience one may have had and is not meant to have a specific relationship to anything. Even though it is made up of individual elements that can be examined, the point of it is to see it in its entirety. The notion of my hand at work should disappear into the mass.

The wire objects are representative forms I’ve worked with in the past. These forms began as abstract shapes, which were solid and volumetric. They were unrecognizable as any one thing but some took the shape of vegetables, hot dogs, or even elements of the human figure. These forms were meant to be ambiguous and optimistically, were somehow attractive in some way whether they were funny, voluptuous, playful, mischievous but lighthearted. Now, these forms are pared down to their simplest shape – skeletal remains or three-dimensional contour drawings.

The work I do is repetitive, meticulous and laborious in nature. As I am making, I think of what my hands are doing and consider these repetitive motions as a primal part of human beings. Through time, we are constantly repeating ourselves to better our world whether it is preparing food, creating art or brushing our teeth. We go through these motions because we have a drive to do so and often our actions become automatic. We forget what we’ve just done because it only needs to be completed. I am intrigued by the notion of intensely handling thousands of pieces of wire, some several times each, coupled with the idea that perhaps my viewer’s eyes will scan over it in a matter of seconds. This idea alone is worth all the work I’ve done. The act of making is the art and hopefully at the same time, I’ve created something visually interesting.
