Stringing Along Strength

Crochet is a captivating motion of weaving thread into patterns and shapes with a single hook, a process that is perpetually inspirational to me. It symbolizes the continuous act of creation embodying adaptability and vision.

Rocks imply permanence and strength, representing an unwavering foundation that withstands adversity. They are a metaphor for friendship, forming through life's heat and pressure building over time. Like people, rocks undergo metamorphosis, reflecting transitions and growth.

Abstraction introduces a conceptual layer offering freedom from representation and revealing the purity of form. It is a filter that strips away associative meanings, leaving behind feelings and ideas that are not material. It provides a canvas for emotional and intellectual interpretation.

The interplay between these elements is where the installation finds its core expression. Crochet serves as a cover, both concealing and revealing the inner essence of the rocks. The rocks serve as my desire to seek abstraction in my art while satisfying the compulsion to make multiples as I meditate through the process.

There are X crocheted rocks and sacks of rock.

Most of the rocks came from my backyard. Some are from Iceland, Philadelphia, Florida, the Oregon Coast, around my neighborhood, and Oregon Decorative Rock.

I NEVER get tired of crocheting. Ever. I can do it every day, all day long. I’m sad the work for this show is over.

The crochet thread came from normal sources locally and online. With one exception – the very fine off-white thread was found by my sister when we moved our elderly parents from their home. This thread is from Japan and must be over 75 years old. It was my mother’s; she is now 97.
