Herded is a nonfigurative portrayal of how people are influenced by their peers as they abandon their own confidences. Herd mentality and other kinds of conformist behaviors have been prevalent since people formed tribes and migrated in groups. We act together, without planned direction as we react to subtle unconscious influences. We voluntarily acquiesce to some suggestion without critical analysis or research, thus undermining our individuality. Sometimes we can find ourselves on the outside of a trend, whether it is some inclination to fashion, social networking, or politics. In making the elements for this installation, I am on the outside looking in. I am reminded of schools of fish, herds of sheep or iron particles converging toward a magnet. There are those in the center, the leaders who transform an idea into an influential movement. Followers gather momentum amassing next to one another creating a throng, a collective body that exhibits beauty in its numbers.
