All photos of Line by Stephen Funk

Line is a perceptible path created by a point moving in space. In simplistic geometric terms, a line is an abstract one-dimensional endless straight entity that has no thickness. My meaning of line is many things that go beyond the physicality of a single line. Working with a multitude of lines, this assembly can live in a world of depth, contrast, repetition and all the other fundamental elements of three dimensions presenting volume, form, shape, contour, and texture. Lines can convey energy, stability and at the same time be erratic and certainly random. Lines create space that compete with itself for both the positive and negative. Line is tricky: it can fool you to think it is flat when it truly has volume, playing with your sense of dimensionality. I compose these singular independent elements in both convoluted and orderly methods to create an atmosphere, a response and even activate emotion.

Wire is a line in three dimensions and the perfect material to use to realize form in space. I am fascinated by its simplicity and its two basic qualities – length and gauge. This is all I need from this remarkable but humble material. The organic shapes I work with contradict the strict straightness definition of line, becoming animated entities within themselves. I am exploring these notions and many of its variations.
