Weight, an installation at Nine Gallery, Portland OR

Weight, having numerous definitions, is defined as a measure of the heaviness of an object; a counterbalance; a bias; excessive fat; importance, authority; pressure, oppressiveness, a burden. The last three similes extend philosophically deep into the association of how weight affects one’s daily life. Weight is not seen, only felt. Often deceptive, this emotional feeling is perceived through a demonstrative viewpoint. We are surrounded and burdened by the weight of responsibility, tragedy, joy, trouble, fiscal accountability, or the sentimentality of objects. I can see weight oozing, slowly heading for contact with our psyche. It touches our feet as its absorbed through our soles. It hovers like a harmless cloud turning into an anvil on our shoulders. Because we are strong, we say, bring it on! Letting it go is a different story. So many variables make it tricky to sort the imperative aspects from the refuse. In my mind, it is an abstract concept that warrants visual recognition. In all its glory and gloom, my portrayal of the weight we carry is represented here.
